'The Island' - Writing Task

1.
The film itself is clearly a Science Fiction film, being in the future with advanced technologies and human cloning, even if it isn’t that far in time (it’s around the year 2020, if I’m not mistaken).
In my opinion, it’s an action movie as well. With all the violence, escaping death several times, and more violence. It’s even more so when you really think about it. They (Lincoln and Jordan) have no idea what things there are on the outside world, and they don’t know what to do or how to do it, making things more exciting for the viewers to see how they’ll make it out alive.
I also think this film has a hint of dystopia, at least from the clones’ point of view. These people (or clones) are trapped, thinking that the outside world is destroyed, then finding out the truth.

2.
Dr. Merrick, like many other doctors and scientists, was probably just doing it for the money. Cloning something isn’t something easy to do, and so it’ll cost a fortune to make one. As seen in the movie, not many ordinary people had clones. It was mostly, if not only, celebrities and other powerful and rich people who had them. To have extra body parts if something were to happen was a great idea, right? Nothing could go wrong! Right? Wrong.
The original idea Dr. Merrick had was that the clones wouldn’t have the ability to feel feelings such as love, friendship, sorrow, anger, hunger etc. But without that, their bodies wouldn’t function properly. And so, the chaos began when Lincoln took his curiosity to a new level and ruined the doctor’s plans.
Hollywood has a lot of weird stuff, and something like this doesn’t surprise me at all. Actually, I want more films like this!

3.
I think that the celebrities take life for granted. In life, you’re not supposed to have a second chance. It’s like cheating on Death. If you lose an arm, congrats, it’s gone. You’re not supposed to get it back. If you get a plastic arm instead, you’re just replacing the real one. Not getting it back.
The fact that there’s a lot of violence in the film is because it draws attention from the audience. Also, it’s filmed in America. America is almost a hundred percent violence itself. If a movie doesn’t have violence or excitement when it’s from there, something’s wrong.

4.

“The Island is real. It’s us.” sounds really cheesy, but it’s true. Dr. Merrick made up ‘The Island’ so that the clones could have some kind of hope of freedom and eternal happiness. But the only place you can find true happiness is within yourself, and the people you love. You’ve just gotta find it.
